Gidday,
Sydney's Green Drinks is up and running again. In fact we've revamped it and are flying under the banner of GreenUps! (We're trying to up the green thinking in this city.)
We're getting good turn-outs - about 100 people each time. Check out photos of GreenUps people in action.
When is it?
The first Tuesday of the month - usually with a 6.00pm start.
Where is it?
We're trying to keep GreenUps fresh - so you'll find us in different locations throughout the year. We like to find places that are interesting and a bit under the radar round Sydney. (Not the usual pub thing.) To find the venue for an upcoming event, please check our sites - either Facebook or MeetUp. (If you're not on Facebook, you can always see details on MeetUp.)
What is it? (And how on earth will drinking help the Earth anyway?)
We reckon there's a groundswell of Sydneysiders quietly beavering away at sustainability in this big, bad, development-centric city. Maybe you're one of them. Or maybe you want to do more, and are looking for ways to seriously get into it. If this is you, you're not alone! There's more of us out there. (You can find us having a drink at GreenUps.)
GreenUps provide an incubator for ideas, connections, inspiration and support. Our goal is to help take sustainability from the fringe to the mainstream. We'll organise the bar and the social environment. You just need to come (and bring people like you.)
Who should come?
People with an interest / passion / concern for the environment and sustainability. No matter what your profession. GreenUps is about creating connections across a range of different sectors. Whether you work in business, science, education, design, the media, the arts, the law, government, NGO's, IT, you name it. We'd like to hear over a beer what you're doing. Or what you think should be happening in Sydney or in your area of work when it comes to sustainable development.
How much does it cost to get in?
Most events are gold coin donation (to cover venue / nibblies cost.) Other than that you just need to buy your own drinks.
Who are the people behind this thing?
So far there's -
Alastair Walton, director of engagement at the City of Sydney Council
Liane Rossler, director of Dinosaur Designs
Dan Cass, communications manager at Greenpeace Australia
Ben Ward, web programmer and owner of The Falconer
Phil Stubbs, 2SER environmental reporter and Environment Show producer
Jess Miller, Permablitz convenor at Friends of the Earth Sydney
Dave Gravina, creative director Digital Eskimo design agency, co-founder of ‘Raise the Bar’*.
* Raise the Bar was the campaign to change the licensing laws and help get Melbourne style bars going in Sydney. (Not surprisingly, we're keen to secure interesting venues.)
Green Drinks - the worldwide phenomenon
GreenUps is part of an international phenomenon. At the time of writing there were over 400 cities worldwide with a Green Drinks event. You can check out the countries and cities that are doing it by going back to the Green Drinks International page.
