We have two very interesting events coming up in the month of March. The first one will occur on Tuesday, March 8th at 5:35 PM in Raymond Building R2-046 on the Macdonald campus. We will screen the film "The Chocolate Farmer." The movie is about cacao farmer and father Eladio Pop who manually works his plantation in the tradition of his Mayan ancestors: as a steward of the land in an unspoiled corner of southern Belize. A tender and moving family tale, director Rohan Fernando's lush cinematic journey intimately captures a year in the life of the Pop family as they struggle to preserve their values in a world that is suddenly and dramatically changing. A lament for cultures lost, this timely and vital film challenges our deeply held assumptions of progress.

Prior to the film we will have a small presentation by Julian Malard who is a PhD. candidate in Bioresource Engineering here at the Macdonald campus. He has been very active in the environmental movement for several years at McGill, spending much of his time with the campus environmental group CERES. He will discuss some of his work and results from his research on food security in Guatamela.

The second event will occur on Tuesday, March 15th at 5:35 PM in Raymond Building R2-046. This event is being coorganized with the Macdonald Student Run Ecological Garden/Farm Project. Graham Calder will provide an introductory talk on permaculture design. In 2009 he founded P3 Permaculture: a social enterprise with a mission to make permaculture accessible. To date Calder has taught 16 courses and has certified over 200 students in permaculture. Based in Montreal, Quebec, he and his team run 2 part-time and 2 full-time PDCs each year, along with design consultations and a multitude of hands-on workshops.

All are welcome to both events!
