We will be having our first Green Drinks event of the semester on Tuesday, October 14th starting at 5:35 PM in the R2-045 auditorium of the Raymond Building at the beautiful Macdonald campus in Ste. Anne de Bellevue. Our speaker will be Julien Malard who is a PhD candidate at the campus and coordinator of the green group CERES. He will give a presentation on his research this summer in Guatemala. The title of the talk is a "Tale of Two Worlds - Food Insecurity in Guatemala."
With a national child chronic under nutrition rate of 49%, Guatemala is by far the hungriest country in "Latin" American; the runner-up, Honduras, is at 29%. Yet, according to World Bank statistics, Guatemala's per capita GDP has consistently outperformed that of Honduras by 50% over the last decade, and Guatemala, at the national level, is mostly self-sufficient in agricultural production. So where is the food? Julien will discuss some of the factors contributing to this problem.
As usual free refreshments are available. All are welcome!
