Green Drinks Ithaca

Presented by: Green Resource Hub of the Finger Lakes

Welcome! Green Drinks Ithaca is the Green Resource Hub's "unprogram." It's an open social for the sustainability-minded to gather without programming, sans agenda, pure fun. Anyone is welcome - entrepreneurs, activists, business owners, educators, citizens, students, retirees, government officials, kith and Kin. Whether you're a sustainability leader or completely new to the movement, we're excited to get together. Any ideas? Share them!

These events will be held one night every 4th Week of the month from 7-10pm. Please join the Ithaca Green Drinks community for our sixth event and enjoy the company of colleagues, friends, and new friends!

Green Drinks for The Economics of Happiness!
MONDAY, April 25th 2011, 7 - 10PM
at
 Northstar (public) House

Please join us for Green Drinks this Monday! Our topic of interest is The Economics of Happiness -- As we close out another Earth Week, ramp up for an abundant spring and summer, and continue work towards balancing our daily lives, let's make some time to think about and share how our choices nourish our long-term well being. We often make our choices thinking about some type of convenience or satisfaction, while meeting our financial constraints; however, during these "here & now" actions of our personal business we can easily forget how our choices have a local impact, which can make the biggest difference in our well-being.

The Economics of Happiness is a film with a particular focus: "'Going local' is a powerful strategy to help repair our fractured world - our ecosystems, our societies and our selves. Far from the old institutions of power, people are starting to forge a very different future... " See the trailer below:

Sustainable Tompkins is hosting a community conversation about local efforts to build a more resilient and fair economy on Wednesday, April 27, 7:00-9:30 pm at Cinemapolis. The evening will feature a panel discussion and the Ithaca premiere of The Economics of Happiness - a film by Helena Norberg-Hodge, Steven Gorelick and John Page, and a project of the International Society for Ecology and Culture (ISEC).

Green Drinks is a simple and fun example of The Economics of Happiness, so we think it's the perfect time to talk about our happiness, local marketplace, and to gear up for the premier and panel discussion on Wednesday! We look forward to seeing YOU there!

Green Drinks Features Planners for a Resilient Tompkins County!
at Northstar (public) House

Please join us for a special Green Drinks Ithaca - a refreshing mix of locals gathering for sustainability, now with a twist of programming!

The SEEN gathering, "Building a Resilient Tompkins County" was intended to be a start of collaborative action towards achieving the community vision for the County. Many in attendance experienced openness for new ideas and refining strategies presented, and noticed sitting next to them was someone else who is most likely a key stakeholder in making that happen. As the evening closed we shared our support for the next steps, and this Green Drinks is an opportunity to do just that!

Scott DoyleWhile we are all thinking about what strategies we specifically can focus on to prioritize our needs, let's continue the conversation and learn more about how the Comprehensive Plan can help. Scott Doyle, a Senior Planner, and possibly a few other members of the Tompkins County Planning team will be present to answer any questions and further the discussion for our resiliency. For example, did you know there is a program to help plant indigenous trees and other great shrubs and flora that helps beautify our natural space and clean the water going into our streams for hundreds of years?!? It is called the Stream Buffer Planting Guide.

As with all Green Drinks events, this event is free and open to the public. At Northstar (public) House, you will find local beers and wines, as well as standard pub fare (some local!) with vegetarian and vegan selections on the menu. Stop by anytime between 7 and 10pm. Please bring a friend or colleague!

Green Drinks Features Community Ownership!
at Northstar House

Please join us for a special Green Drinks Ithaca this Monday at the Northstar House. You will find local beers and wines, as well as standard pub fare (some local!) with vegetarian and vegan selections on the menu.

Buffalo Street BooksRecently, the Ithaca community received news that our only local, independent bookstore, Buffalo Street Books, would be closing. The immediate response was that we share a passion for our independent bookstore and what it represents... Something must be done. An independent store thrives from involvement in the community and by the community, from how it programs, stocks its shelves and works with customers, which uniquely positions it to be highly receptive to feedback and highly accountable to invested resources. This is the kind of business that may never see huge monetary gains, nor constant growth, but can create enrichment, equity and social capital beyond measure. Such benefits are essential to sustaining our local economy. Consider it the slow food of the literary world.

Bob Proehl and supporters have committed to a Community Buy Out Initiative, to save the bookstore and convert ownership from a sole proprietorship to a cooperative. A cooperative ownership model is recognized to best match the needs of such community enterprises. Bob will be at Northstar to make a 5-minute presentation about the initiative, and to talk to anyone interested in learning more.

We at the Hub encourage discussion and engagement in place-based investment, which is represented by Buffalo Street Books, our Sustainable Enterprise & Entrepreneur Network, and many other community initiatives. Join the conversation, and the movement!

Green Drinks Ithaca - Now at Giving Tree Cafe!

Report on Monday, June 28th, 2010

We kicked off a summer of Green Drinks in Ithaca with a new venue and some fresh faces. The Giving Tree (formerly ABC Café) graciously opened their doors to the Green Drinks crowd, preparing a delicious spread of summer soups and salads, fresh bread, salsa, and hummus – a menu comprised of farm fresh, local foods that was enjoyed by all. In addition, local beer wine and hard cider was served, with a special on Ithaca draft beers, a Fingerlakes white and Eve's Hard Cider. Despite the torrential downpours throughout the evening, Green Drinkers didn’t miss the opportunity to meet up with friends, make fortuitous connections, and enjoy this summer kick-off event. With about 40+ people in attendance and lots of first-timers, June Green Drinks was a good time for all.

As we look toward July, we can hardly believe it’s been six months since Green Drinks Ithaca began! We want to mark the occasion by taking some time to hear from you. Please join us at Northstar House Monday August 23rd from 7pm – 10pm to participate in a short survey that will help determine future programming of Green Drinks. We look forward to seeing you again soon!
