Greater Salem Green Drinks ‘11

Greater Salem Green Drinks’ third year featured speakers addressing issues of local and national significance—food, energy, and development. Meetings in Salem, Beverly, Wenham, and Danvers received record attendance with monthly networking attracting 30-60 people. The energy and enthusiasm to connect made our green forum welcome at many great new venues.

The e-mail list has grown to 225+. We are on Facebook, and there are more than 80 of us connected through the Greater Salem (MA) Green Drinks group on LinkedIn. In August, Salem News featured Green Drinks and the Renewable Energy Task Force in early discussions about the city’s wind proposal for Winter Island.

While some of you may have just attended a meeting or two, or participate as much as possible, I want to thank you all for taking part in one of Eastern Massachusetts’ strongest green social networks.

In 2012, Greater Salem Green Drinks will continue creating green alliances and fostering environmentalism in the Salem region communities. Green businesses, entrepreneurs, non-profits, green homeowners and consumers, activists, farmers, renewable energy innovators, professors, cleaners, designers, architects, contractors, plumbers, caterers, scientists, professionals, conservationists, consultants, and more are among us.

Thank you and Happy New Year!

Andrea Fox, Greater Salem Green Drinks Organizer

2011:

The year 2011 was hot with discussion. Green Drinks covered the power plant, port development project, and advancement of wind energy in our region and the very real issues facing it. We celebrated the amazing development of our local food system and the fortitude of innovative local green businesses. We listened to those that work both locally and nationally to drive sustainable practices and protect natural resources and spoke to each other about progress.

News!

The plant begins to close with two out of four systems shutting down at the beginning of the New Year, with scheduled total shutdown planned for 2014. Conversations about the use of the property commence. Special thanks to Jeff Barz-Snell and Pat Gozemba of SAFE for discussing issues facing reuse of the property and the work of the city Task Force at the Green Drinks open forum in November 2011 at Café Polonia.

Action!

We held our first successful fundraiser for Project Adventure and The Food Project at Moraine Farm, Beverly in June 2011. Local food is mission critical to engendering sustainable communities. Thanks to all those that attended Green Drinks’ benefit supporting and showcasing these fantastic organizations! Three cheers for the amazing venue overlooking our water supply, Wenham Lake, Chive Event’s ginger sparkling iced tea, Chef Liam Gove’s local appetizers chock full of Beverly-grown produce, and Sweet Adeline’s treats.

The Future!

There is a strong history of support for green clean energy in this region from being home to the oldest solar field in the world to the stellar wind turbines beginning to dot the coastline. The Winter Island Wind proposal is receiving both “cheers and jeers” from the community, and Green Drinks is sure to be part of the ongoing conversation in 2012.
