More than 70% of India's people live in villages and rural townships. With an average population growth of 1.5% per year, the demand for electricity has in the past 20 years significantly increased. The notable increase in demand of rural households has visible economic, social, cultural and evnironmental impacts on village life and triggered the change of lifestyle and traditional structures in rural India. Based on empirical findings, this presentation will provide a glimpse on the implications of rural electrification in India and assess the potential and benefits of off-grid renewable solar technologies.
Speaker: Niclas D. Weimar concurrently works as Project Assistant at the Center of Modern Indian Studies at the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences of Cologne University (Germany) and Market Analyst at Kisun Off-Grid Solar Industries. He studied Modern Chinese-Studies, Business, Energy Economics, Indology and Oriental Sciences in Cologne, Isfahan, Shanghai and Taipei and focuses in his research and teaching on rural development, energy policy and international relations in East and South Asia.
