Our Next Green Drinks Event:

TOPIC:  Question: What happened in Durban, South Africa?

Answer: Climate conference: 28th of Nov. – 9th of Dec. 2011

You’ve seen it in the news, but it took a day longer than normal. Disappointing, or a significant breakthrough? It’s time to revive the Hangzhou Green Drinks, and what better opportunity, than to catch up on issues of global importance right at the start of the new year?!

The 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the 7th Session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the Meeting of the Parties (CMP7) to the Kyoto Protocol, took place in the sunny city of Durban, South Africa.” (http://www.cop17-cmp7durban.com/)

Our speaker will give us some background information on the UNFCCC and the Kyoto Protocol, what the outcome of Durban was, and then we hope that people from different nationalities in their discussions will be able to discover the complexity and different point of views of international negotiations themselves.

Speaker Info:

Lara J. Esser is German-Chinese and works as at the International Centre on Small Hydropower in Hangzhou. She studied marine and freshwater biology, physiology and ecology at the University of Hull (UK), Northern Michigan University (US), and the University of Hong Kong, as well as a M.Sc. in Environmental Technology at Imperial College (UK).

While her past research interests included freshwater crabs, mangrove ecosystem management and valuation, she currently works on a global small hydropower report and a programmatic CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) project. Her past internship experience with Greenpeace, WWF and IUCN have made her aware of global environmental issues, sustainable development and the role of the media.

Our Past Events

Sustainable Energy:

Without the Hot Air

Have you ever wondered how much energy we use and where it comes from? Have you wondered how much sustainable energy could be produced, but are tired of all the “hot air” and contradictory statements from the media and lobbies from all sides? Sustainable Energy – Without the Hot Air, written by Cambridge Professor David JC MacKay, presents the debate about energy using just the numbers and facts. This talk will use Professor MacKay’s book as a guide to compare the energy situations in China, the United States, and Europe and to explore how energy could be produced sustainably.

Speaker: Wesley Allred
