October GREEN DRINKS: Citizen Science and Water Quality Testing

Wednesday, October 18, 6-8 pm

LOCATION:
Waucoma Yacht Club
279 Front St
New Haven CT

SPECIAL GUEST: ZOFIA BAUMANN, PhD of UConn Avery Point

Mercury is a global pollutant and a natural element. Mercury cycles through the environment and ends up in our fish. Eating these fish can then harm our health and well being.
How does methyl mercury get in our fish?
Which and how much fish is safe for adults, children, women of childbearing age, pregnant and nursing women to eat?
Zofia Baumann (Ph.D.) is a researcher at UCONN, Avery Point, who received funding from Connecticut Sea Grant to study mercury in Long Island Sound. She collaborated with citizen scientists from the New Haven Bioregional Group led by Lynne Bonnett. She will present some of her team's findings.

WHAT IS GREENDRINKS? Every month people with an interest in the environment and sustainability meet up at informal sessions known as GreenDrinks. We have a lively mixture of people from NGOs, academia, government and business. Come along and you'll be made welcome. Just say, "are you green?" and we will look after you and introduce you to whoever is there. It's a great way of catching up with people you know and also for making new contacts.
