Hope an Fear: Climate Change and the Meaning of Life

The Yampa Valley Sustainability Council’s Talking Green  will kick off the 2012 Talking Green Series with “Hope and Fear: Climate Change and the Meaning of Life” featuring author and climate change activist Auden Schendler.

 

Basalt, Colo., resident Schendler, who serves as vice president of sustainability for Aspen Skiing Co., was named a global warming innovator by Time magazine in 2006. He will discuss the challenges and opportunities of climate change during a public talk at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24, at The Bear River in Steamboat Springs.

 

Schendler’s well-received book “Getting Green Done: Hard Truths from the Front Lines of the Sustainability Revolution was called "an antidote to greenwash" by NASA's James Hansen. Schendler’s writing has been published in such media as Harvard Business Review, the L.A. Times, Slate and Scientific American Earth 3.0. His efforts have been covered in Outside, Fast Company, Travel+Leisure and Businessweek magazines.

Schendler worked in corporate sustainability at Rocky Mountain Institute, has testified to Congress on the impacts of climate change and speaks widely on sustainability.  He has been named Wirth Chair "Pioneer of the New Energy Economy" by the University of Colorado and a "Climate Saver" by the EPA. He has also received an E-chievement award on the radio show E-town.

Talking Green-Green Drinks is a monthly networking event that brings together individuals, organizations and businesses from throughout Routt County to learn about various environmental topics. In its early stages, Talking Green focused on Green Building, but recently topics have broadened to include Zero Waste, Colorado Carbon Fund, Recycling, Geothermal heating, Xeriscaping, Solar Power, Energy Star, and Community Supported Agriculture. The events are free to attend and take place the fourth Tuesday of every month in the timeframe of 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at various venues in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Talking Green-Green Drinks is a program of the Yampa Valley Sustainability Council.
