Guest Speaker: Tom Hackney: Tom is an energy policy specialist and Policy Director for the BCSEA, and was one of BCSEA’s founders in 2003. He has gained extensive experience in analyzing energy plans and forecasts through a decade of coordinating BCSEA’s interventions at the BC Utilities Commission. Tom is especially interested in stimulating society and government to make a big shift to renewable energy and energy conservation that will minimize climate change and maximize long term energy security. He has degrees in science and architecture.
100% Renewable Energy by 2050 Pathway for the District of Saanich: In April this year, the Council for the District of Saanich approved a grant to the Victoria Chapter of the BC Sustainable Energy Association to produce a “Pathway” report for how the district could achieve a 100% Renewable Energy by 2050 target; and to present the findings to the public in a town hall meeting. During this summer and fall, Tom Hackney analyzed Saanich’s energy usage and emissions and developed a proposal — one of several possibilities — for how Saanich could achieve the goal. The Chapter held its “Big Town Hall” event on Saturday, October 29th, attracting 135 participants to hear the results of the analysis and give their views. Participant feedback was energized and enthusiastic, with practically unanimous support for the 100% RE goal. Typical sticky note comments were: “Hope,” “Pride,” “Relief,” “Inspiring,” “Leader.” The next steps will include submitting the results to Saanich Council, perhaps with a presentation to Council in January. The next step for Saanich would be to consider whether to adopt this target. Saanich residents are encouraged to tell their Council members what they feel about a 100% RE by 2050 target.
BC Sustainable Energy Association: The BC Sustainable Energy Association (BCSEA) is a member-based, non-profit organization that supports the sustainable production, distribution, and consumption of energy in British Columbia and beyond. The association collaborates with governments, industry, universities and other institutions, other non-governmental organizations, and citizens to put in place the conditions needed to accelerate the province’s transition to a lower-carbon economy.
